Nationally-recognized Surgeon Joins Multi-disciplinary Surgical Weight-loss Team

(St. Louis) — Des Peres Hospital’s MyNewSelf Surgical Weight Loss Program announced today that board-certified general and advanced laparoscopic surgeon J. Stephen Scott, MD, FACS, has joined its surgical weight loss physician panel.  He was most recently the medical director of SSM Weight Loss Institute.

“We are pleased that Dr. Scott has joined our medical staff and our surgical weight loss program,” said John Grah, Des Peres Hospital CEO. “We look forward to tapping his expertise and experience as we expand our program into new areas of service.”

Dr. Scott joins program medical director, Darin Minkin, DO, and bariatric surgeons Matt Ricks, DO, Van Wagner, MD, and Richard O. Follwell, DO.

"It is both an honor and pleasure to welcome Dr. Scott into the program", said Dr. Minkin.  "He and I have known each other and worked together peripherally over the past 12 years.  By now collaborating directly and working side by side in a single, organized program I feel we can provide our Bariatric patient population with the highest level of surgical care in the area."

Dr. Scott has more than 20 years of experience studying obesity and treating this condition as a surgeon.  He is nationally-recognized for his proficiency and expertise in many laparoscopic procedures.  As national laboratory director for the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons, Dr. Scott has overseen the training provided to surgeons interested in surgical techniques and overall management of the morbidly obese.  He is designated as a Center of Excellence surgeon by the American Society for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery.

Dr. Scott graduated from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in 1986.  He completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida in 1991, and went into private practice the same year.

Des Peres Hospital’s MyNewSelf Surgical Weight Loss Program offers its surgical weight loss services to morbidly obese adult patients who have repeatedly failed more conservative weight reduction alternatives such as supervised diet, drugs, exercise and behavior-modification programs.  Des Peres Hospital is a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, as recognized by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

Surgical procedures performed include laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding.  All three procedures help patients manage their diet by reducing the amount of food they can eat at one time and making the patient feel full for a much longer time after eating.

Free pre-operative educational seminars, post-operative nutrition and lifestyle seminars, alumni and family support groups are also offered by the program’s multi-disciplinary team.

Surgery for obesity is not for everyone.  To be considered a candidate for bariatric surgery, individuals must be either severely obese (100 pounds or more overweight, with a body mass index of 40 or more) or obese with associated complications (a BMI of 35 or more, with a condition such as diabetes, severe sleep apnea, high blood pressure, lung and/or heart disease).

Patients who are interested in weight loss surgery are encouraged to attend a free seminar and should call our offices at 314-966-9640 or toll free 1-866-573-5673 to register.
