Patient and Family Testimonials

Mary McDaniel
Mary McDaniel

Mary McDaniel really didn't know she was having problems with her heart.  She said it crept up on her slowly -- she started noticing that her energy level was low, she couldn't finish her housework and it was just progressively gettign worse.  She thought to herself: "What is going on with my body?"

She made an appointment for a physical and failed her treadmill test.  Initially, doctors thought that a catherization would be the answer, but after further tests, a triple bypass with a pacemaker became her reality.  Dr. Gordon Knight discovered that three of her main arteries were blocked.  This was a surprise to McDaniel, who thought she was just getting older and tired.

McDaniel has more energy and is back at work after recovering form her surgery.  She has lost 15 lbs and bagan walking.  She now realizes how important it is to listen to your body and encourages others to do the same.  She has recommended Des Peres Hospital to her friends.

Mr. and Mrs. McCallie
Tresa and Franklin McCallie

Franklin McCallie does not shy away from a challenge. Anyone who serves for 22 years as the principal of a high school must be pretty brave and terribly determined - and McCallie is just that. For 22 years, he served at Kirkwood High School, immensely enjoying his work with the teachers and students. But walking those long halls became very painful when he developed arthritis in his knees.

“During my fourteenth year at Kirkwood, I nearly came to a halt with arthritis. I had arthroscopic surgery done to remove some floating particles from the meniscus, but walking was still very painful,” he said.
McCallie lived with the pain for several more years by exercising consistently, attending therapy and using ibuprofen regularly. But by the age of 61, walking became so painful that he decided to retire earlier than he planned.

Within the first year of his retirement, McCallie decided to have a total knee replacement on his right knee. In October of 2001, McCallie went to Des Peres Hospital, where Dr. Joe Williams performed the successful surgery.

“I had a wonderful experience at Des Peres hospital. I was up walking the same day of surgery, which surprised me. Of course, the first three weeks after the surgery were rough. I had a therapist who came to my house and worked with me. She was a nice young woman but tough as nails. It took about six weeks before I felt I had full control of my leg once more.”

When he saw how much better he could move after the surgery on his right knee, McCallie went back in February 2003 to have his left knee replaced. Because the arthritis was only on one side of the knee, the doctor was able to perform a partial replacement on the left leg, which meant a faster and easier recovery time.

Fourteen months after this second surgery, Franklin McCallie participated in the RAGBRAI, a 500 mile bike ride across the state of Iowa from the Missouri river to the Mississippi River. Since then, he has also taken several trips to such places as London, New York and Washington D.C., where he was able to take walking tours, enjoy museums and even participate in a political march, all without the debilitating knee pain that had slowed him down before.

“I’ve recommended this procedure to many people and will continue to do so,” he says. “In fact, I admire it so much, that I carry a small replica of the joint used in my replacements on my key chain so I can show it to those who are interested.”

"I would like to take the time to commend the emergency room staff for the warm and most comfortable hospitality my family and I recieved. From the beginning of being registered in unto the very end of being discharged the entire staff was warm, personalble and friendly. This is the type of service and treatment that is needed at all times, especially when coming in with an ill loved one. Thank you so much for your concern and commitment that each of you have shown for the lives, health and well being of those that need your services. Please keep up the good work. It is truly appreciated. "

"I came to your ER by ambulance with a friend who was sick on April 27. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped us. The staff at Busch Stadium suggested that you would be able to get my friend cared for and either get us back on the road home or at least into a stable situation for the night in good time. Your ER staff did that. We were 4.5 hours from home and when you discharged my friend, I was confident that we'd make it without any trauma.

This was a big weekend for us...a weekend at the ballpark and relaxing away from our work. My friend's illness could have really been devastating, but it wasn't. The ballpark would have been better than my driving tour of the city (from the front seat of the ambulance and then the back seat of the taxi) and my quiet "sitting room" in the ER, but Ialways knew someone was working on an answer and then a response. I am very grateful for all that your staff did, including calling a good taxito get us back across town. Thank you! "

"Just wanted to let you know (my mom) felt like a princess, being spoiled rotten while in your care.  She gets sprung today sometime and she looks great.  She has a bandage on her knee, but no real swelling or bruising (yet).  To look at her, you would never know that she had just had her knee replaced, I find that amazing! You have a great hospital! "

"Kristen was my (patient care) tech while I was recovering from surgery. She has a wonderful personality and sense of humor and took great care of me.  She made my stay at Des Peres Hospital a very pleasant one.  The world needs more nurses like her!"

"I want to thank you for your attention and concern during my stay at Des Peres Hospital.  I can honestly say that on a scale from 1-10, the staff (from surgeons ,RNs, techs, PTs, OTs, food service, admitting, etc.), facility, and overall experience was a 9.  I operate on the belief that no one is perfect so a rating of 9 (possibly 9+) is something to be quite proud of.

My surgeon was brilliant yet comforting.  The Anesthesiologist was reassuring.  Instead of what could have been a traumatizing experience, the surgery staff made me feel like this was the best decision I could have made for myself and that I didn't have a care in the world.   Post-op......I felt like a celebrity, royalty, and a child rolled into one.

Every person who I interacted with on ANY level of care, acted with the utmost professionalism, compassion, and spirit unlike any other health care facility I've seen.  I need to express how impressed I am with the fine group of individuals I was blessed with meeting. They didn't miss a beat. They made me laugh, smile, and honestly feel cared for. "
